چکیده

The organophosphate pesticides have been used extensively for plant protection; however these chemicals may be toxic to mammals (1,2). Insecticidal action and toxic effect are due to their being potent cholinesterase inhibitors (3,4). Acetylcholine is believed to be the primary transmitter affected by organophosphate insecticides. Although the pesticidal action of organophosphate insecticides has been well studied (5-8), little information (3,9,10) is available about other neurochemical changes. Since in toxicity studies organophosphate pesticides have been found to alter catecholamine levels of the various brain regions (9,10), it is probable that this group of pesticides may affect the catecholamine or other neurotransmitter levels either by a change in the reuptake process or in the catabolism of these amines. In this study we report the effect of lebaycid (O,O-dimethyt-O-(4-methylmercapto-3-methylphenyl)-thiophosphate), metacid (O,O-dimethyl O-(p-nitrophenyl) phosphorothioate), and metasystox ((O,Odimethyl-S-2-ethylsulphinyl)-ethylthiophosphate) on monoamine oxidase which is inw~lved in the breakdown of catecholamines and other biologically active amines.

Serotonin and benzylamine oxidation by type A and type B MAO of rat brain in presence of organophosphate pesticides.

Organophosphate (OP) pesticides, monocrotophos (MCP), dichlorvos (DDVP) and phosphamidon significantly inhibit both MAO-A and MAO-B activities in rat brain mitochondria. The inhibition of MAO-A by MCP is reversible whereas the inhibition by DDVP and phosphamidon is irreversible. MAO-B is inhibited irreversibly by all these organophosphates suggesting that the mechanism of action of OP pesticide...

Effect of three organophosphates on respiration in rat brain and liver tissue.

The effects of three organophosphate pesticides, i.e. monocrotophos, dichlorvos, and phosphamidon on respiration in rat brain and liver tissue slices have been studied. Among these pesticides dichlorvos causes significant inhibition of respiration both in brain and liver.

Rat Brain Biogenic Amine Levels during Acute and Sub- acute Phosphamidon Treatment with Reference to Behavioral Tolerance

Organophosphate (OP) pesticides exert their toxic effects by cholinesterase inhibition and the consequent prolongation of the undesirable effects of accumulation of acetylcholine. However, sustained cholinesterase inhibition through sustained sub-acute administration of organophosphates leads to disappearance of the initial signs of toxicity, termed behavioral tolerance. The present study exami...

Phosalone-Induced Changes in Regional Cholinesterase Activities in Rat Brain during Behavioral Tolerance

Organophosphate pesticides exert their toxic effects by cholinesterase inhibition and the consequent prolongation of the undesirable effects of accumulation of acetylcholine. The signs of toxicity include tremors, convulsions, lachrymation, defecation etc. However, sustained cholinesterase inhibition through sustained administration of organophosphates would lead to the gradual disappearance of...

Induction of neurotoxicity by organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos and modulating role of cow urine

INTRODUCTION Organophosphate pesticides are among the most widely used synthetic chemicals for controlling a wide variety of pests and for domestic purposes. Among these chlorpyrifos (CPF) is the most extensively used pesticide throughout the world, including India. OBJECTIVE The present study was undertaken to examine the neurotoxicity induced by CPF and modulatory effect of cow urine as a n...
